Many cats exhibit change in eating behaviors from time to time. The first thing you need to do is visit your vet to make sure that there is no physical problem going on that has changed his eating habits. If all things check out well at the doctor’s office, there are a few suggestions we can make that might help the situation:
1. Always feed your feline companion reputable, brand name foods that nourish your cat with the optimum necessities he needs for a healthy life. Try to avoid foods that don’t have a meat protein listed as the first ingredient on the label, or ones that have many ‘fillers’ in them...your cat may not be getting all the valuable minerals and nutrients it needs!
2. Try canned food if your cat is refusing to eat his dry, or vice-versa.
3. Avoid giving too many ‘people’ treats from your supper table...this may cause him to ‘turn off’ to feline food completely!
4. Make sure his food bowls are kept in a quiet, ‘special’ place reserved just for him. Cats will not eat if they are annoyed while eating, or if the spot they are supposed to eat in is too noisy, or ‘busy’ with household traffic or other distractions. More than one cat? Make sure they are calm when eating together. If you see aggression, a separate eating area may be necessary for the other cat!
5. Always make sure to wash out your cat’s bowls regularly with warm soap and water; any encrusted build-up from canned food, or coating from dry food, is unhealthy for your feline friend to be eating from. Some owners get used to just re-filling bowls with dry food for days, or weeks, without ever washing out the bowl.... To keep your cat healthy keep things clean!
